PROJECT BRIEF

The Temple Beth El expansion and renovation project included an expanded sanctuary, accommodating 1,390 people, expanded social hall, administrative office, a new chapel, a new social hall with catering kitchen, new meeting rooms, and expansive foyers to provide circulation space along with areas for informal gatherings. Outdoor spaces were designed as an extension of the interior space by providing direct access from lobbies and social halls to several gardens which surround the building, including a private meditation garden accessible from the Chapel.

Temple Beth El sits atop high ground in Shalom Park. The east facing original building had been outgrown since originally constructed. Three sides of the religious facility were expanded into what eventually would be double the size. Additions to the south include the main entrance atrium spaces, expanded fellowship hall, and services. To the west are the administrative office wing, the new recognition hall, and chapel. Existing offices facing north were removed and reconstructed to include the board room, a second fellowship hall, and associated services.

The existing Sanctuary remains at the heart of the facility including a new bimah and movable partitions to the fellowship halls on each side. In-between the additions were placed gardens of various sizes and functions highlighted by the chapel garden that is surrounded by a low privacy wall and landscaping. The forms and materials help to create a village like setting. Exterior and interior Jerusalem stone of varying textures, wood treatments, and cove/site lighting give a sacred feel to the Temple. The east side curtain-wall glass of the Temple was enlarged to allow views outward to the manicured landscaping and natural wooded areas. A canopy connects the Temple with the existing Educational building. Stain glass was removed, restored, and reinstalled in specifically designed locations throughout. Congregational events for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and high holy days are now be accommodated in the facility.
